Mattress & box spring disposal in New York City, NY
Last checked: 2026-10-25 against the official sources below.
Short answer: Free DSNY curbside pickup, no appointment, but it MUST be sealed in a plastic bag (not red or orange).
What the official sources say about this item
- Set mattresses, box springs and futons out on your trash-only day, not your recycling day.
- Each mattress or box spring must be fully sealed in a plastic bag of any color except red or orange, to stop bed bugs. The City does not provide bags.
- Unbagged mattresses won't be collected and can be fined (DSNY says up to $300; 311's bulk page cites $100).
- Up to 6 bulk items per collection day.
How to arrange it
- No appointment: look up your trash day on DSNY's collection schedule and put the bagged mattress at the curb between 6 p.m. and midnight the night before.
Rules change, and where a source is unclear we say so. Confirm with the city (311) before setting anything out.
Paid option: junk removal
Not eligible for city pickup (for example, a larger apartment building) or need it gone sooner? A private junk removal service can haul items from inside your home for a fee. [Partner link not yet active]
Disclosure: Free official options are always listed first. If a paid-removal link appears, it may be an affiliate link and we may earn a commission at no cost to you. It never changes what we recommend.
