Refrigerator & appliances disposal in New York City, NY
Last checked: 2026-10-25 against the official sources below.
Short answer: Free, but you MUST book a DSNY CFC (Freon) removal appointment first.
What the official sources say about this item
- DSNY won't collect fridges, freezers, ACs, dehumidifiers or water coolers without a CFC removal appointment.
- Remove doors, hinges and locks from refrigerators and freezers before set-out.
- On appointment day DSNY removes the CFC and tags the appliance; it's collected on your next recycling day. Only tagged appliances are collected.
- DSNY cannot collect newer appliances with R600a or R32 refrigerant (yellow triangle sticker with black flames); contact the manufacturer or a private carter. Residents only; businesses must hire a private carter.
How to arrange it
- Call 311 (212-639-9675) or submit DSNY's online CFC Recovery Appointment Request. No same-day appointments; up to 10 appliances per appointment.
- Put it at the curb with the back facing the street between 6 p.m. and midnight the night before the appointment.
Rules change, and where a source is unclear we say so. Confirm with the city (311) before setting anything out.
Paid option: junk removal
Not eligible for city pickup (for example, a larger apartment building) or need it gone sooner? A private junk removal service can haul items from inside your home for a fee. [Partner link not yet active]
Disclosure: Free official options are always listed first. If a paid-removal link appears, it may be an affiliate link and we may earn a commission at no cost to you. It never changes what we recommend.
