Last checked: 2026-10-28 against the official sources below.
Short answer: Free curbside by 311 appointment if it's wrapped in plastic, or drop it unwrapped at the Fort Totten Transfer Station.
What the official sources say about this item
- Mattresses, box springs and bed frames are accepted for DPW bulk collection; mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic.
- Set it out where your trash is collected between 6:30 p.m. the night before and 6 a.m. on your appointment day.
- Fort Totten Transfer Station (4900 John McCormack Rd NE) takes mattresses without wrapping, Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Curbside pickup covers homes and buildings with three or fewer units; larger buildings need a private hauler.
How to arrange it
- Call 311 or use 311.dc.gov to request a Residential Bulk Collection (up to seven items per appointment).
Rules change, and where a source is unclear we say so. Confirm with the city (311) before setting anything out.
Paid option: junk removal
Not eligible for city pickup (for example, a larger apartment building) or need it gone sooner? A private junk removal service can haul items from inside your home for a fee. [Partner link not yet active]
Disclosure: Free official options are always listed first. If a paid-removal link appears, it may be an affiliate link and we may earn a commission at no cost to you. It never changes what we recommend.
